Moving to Australia with children: school enrolment

What new arrivals need to know about Australian schools: visa status and fees, English support, documents and choosing where to live.

Updated 19 October 2026 · General information, not advice

Children who live in Australia can attend school, but the rules on fees and enrolment depend on visa status and on the state you move to.

Visa status and fees

Government school tuition is free for Australian citizens and permanent residents. In most states, children of some temporary visa holders pay fees at government schools, and international students on a student visa pay full fees. Each state runs an international or temporary-residents office that confirms what applies to your visa subclass – contact it before you enrol.

English language support

Many states offer intensive English programs for newly arrived students. In NSW, for example, some high schools host Intensive English Centres; other states run new-arrival programs in selected schools.

Documents to bring

  • passports and visas for the child and parents
  • birth certificate (with a certified translation if not in English)
  • previous school reports
  • immunisation records – these may need to be added to the Australian Immunisation Register
  • proof of your Australian address

Choosing where to live

Because government schools give priority to local students, where you rent or buy decides your local school. Check the zone before you sign. Read our catchment guide.
