In Victoria every government school has a school zone. Students are entitled to enrol at their designated neighbourhood school, which is generally the closest government school to their permanent residential address.
How to find your zoned school
The Find my School website shows school zones on a map for each year level. Zones for primary and secondary schools are different, and they are reviewed from time to time, so check the zone for the year your child will start.
Enrolment timeline
Victoria runs a statewide timeline for Prep enrolments and for the move from Year 6 to Year 7. Families usually apply in the year before the child starts, and the Year 7 placement process runs through the primary school in Year 6.
Out-of-zone enrolment
Schools with spare capacity may accept students from outside the zone, using the department’s placement priority order. Schools at capacity may only be able to take students who live in the zone.
Documents you will need
- proof of the child’s age and identity, such as a birth certificate or passport
- proof of your residential address, such as a lease, council rates notice or utility bills
- an immunisation history statement (most states ask for one at enrolment)
- visa and passport details if the child or parents are not Australian citizens
- any family law or parenting orders, and health or learning support information
General information, last reviewed 19 October 2026. Rules and dates change – confirm with the Victorian Department of Education before you enrol.
