Updated 19 October 2026 · General information, not advice
There is no single best school, only the best fit for your child and family. This checklist focuses on practical factors you can check yourself.
Location and travel
- Is the school your local (zoned) school? If not, how likely is an out-of-area place?
- How will your child get there – walking, bus, train or car – and how long will it take?
- Is before- and after-school care available?
Size and setting
Large schools can offer more subjects and activities; small schools can feel more personal. Enrolment numbers are published for every school – on this site they appear on each NSW school profile.
Programs and support
- Languages, music, sport and extension programs
- Support for students with disability or learning needs
- English language support for students from non-English-speaking backgrounds
Visit the school
Most schools run open days or tours. Watch how students and staff interact, look at the facilities your child would actually use, and ask how the school communicates with families.
